Vienna Production of Lend Me A Tenor starring Otto Schenk Reaches 450th Performance

Ken Ludwig's Lend Me A Tenor reached performance 450 at the renowned Josefstadt Theater in Vienna last week, and it was a cause for celebration. The play has been running continuously in repertory at the Kammerspiele, the more modern stage of the Theater in der Josefstadt, for 16 years, since October 24, 1990, and the majority of the performances have starred the great Otto Schenk.Schenk, now 76, has been a popular Austrian stage and screen actor for decades, and in addition to his continuous run in Lend Me A Tenor, he has recently starred in The Importance of Being Earnest at the Josefstadt playing Lady Bracknell. Schenk is also celebrated for his directing career, and has directed 16 productions at the Metropolitan Opera, as well as many other opera productions around the world. From 1988 to 1997 he was co-manager of the Theater in der Josefstadt, where he starred in and directed many productions.Lend Me A Tenor has continued to be one of the most popular comedies in the world over the past two decades. It is playing virtually continuously somewhere in the U.S., and it has been produced in literally thousands of productions around the world, in at least 16 languages.Ludwig's other hit plays include Moon Over Buffalo, which starred Carol Burnett on Broadway, Leading Ladies, Crazy For You, Shakespeare in Hollywood (winner of the Helen Hayes Award as Best New Play), and Twentieth Century, starring the new Golden Globe winner, Alec Baldwin.
