The Bristol Old Vic, one of the great provincial theatres of England, has commissioned Ken Ludwig to write a new adaptation of The Three Musketeers for its 2006-07 Christmas Season. The play will run for 8 weeks, beginning December 2. The theatre has had a highly successful history with its Christmas shows for the past few seasons, including last year's Alladin, based on the book by Philip Pullman; and, in previous years, a play based on Alice in Wonderland and the musical of Cinderella. Recently, Ludwig has written a number of successful adaptations, including Twentieth Century, which appeared on Broadway with Alec Baldwin and Anne Heche in 2004, and The Beaux' Stratagem, in collaboration with Thornton Wilder. The director of The Bristol Old Vic's production of The Three Musketeers will be Tim Sheader. The Artistic Director of the theatre is Simon Reade.
